Lecture Performance

It seems that artists — those of a specific kind, at least — have adjusted their practice to accomodate a contemporary condition: Much of their output nowadays consists of the completion of applications for funding. They are the involuntary prototypes of the Entrepreneurial Self, the New Spirit of Capitalism's brainchild.

Standardized application forms become the matrix to which artistic output is often tailored. The outlook is receiving funding. If it doesn't come, the project remains unrealized. One may opine of this condition in different ways, but undoubtedly, it produces a strange dispositif: Artists of a specific kind do not any longer produce material (or conceptual) works of art, but instead they produce promises. In this sense, they become a product of and feed back into their immediate environment — an environment of culture which itself spits out many promises, but very rarely delivers. An inverted relationship to that which is traditionally deemed as the "artistic work" emerges: The actual production of artistic output beyond applications becomes a somewhat annoying necessity on the path to securing future funding. The main activity and creative output of "Application Artists", however, is applying, drafting and promising.

Based on a very personal case study, the performative lecture investigates how running on fumes in a foggy environment of speculation shapes the reality of artistic practice, of artistic (non-)production and of cultural economy.

Es scheint als seien Künstler — zumindest solche eines bestimmten Schlags — die unfreiwilligen Prototypen des sogenannten Unternehmerischen Subjekts, entsprungen einem „Neuen Geist des Kapitalismus".

Das standardisierte Bewerbungsformular wird zur Matrix, auf die künstlerische Arbeit heute oft zugeschnitten ist. Vermeintliches Ziel ist die Förderung von Projekten, welche möglicherweise niemals realisiert werden. Hier wird ein seltsames Dispositif geschaffen: Die Künstler eines bestimmten Schlags sind nicht länger darauf bedacht, materielle (oder konzeptuelle) künstlerische Arbeiten zu produzieren, sondern sie produzieren Versprechen.

Es scheint ein umgekehrtes, vielleicht perverses Verhältnis zu dem zu geben, was klassischerweise als „Werk" gedacht wurde: Auf dem Sprung von einem Fördertopf in den nächsten wird das hin und wieder stattfindende Produzieren einer tatsächlichen künstlerischen Arbeit und das damit verbundene Erweitern des Portfolios zu einer lästigen Notwendigkeit, um das Stellen neuer Förderanträge zu legitimieren. Die Hauptbeschäftigung dieser Künstler eines bestimmten Schlags — der „Application Artists" — ist jedoch das Bewerben, Entwerfen und Versprechen selbst.

Ausgehend von einer persönlichen Fallstudie untersucht die Lecture Performance, wie das Werfen von Rauchbomben in einem beruflichen Umfeld voller spekulativem Nebel die Wirklichkeitserfahrung künstlerischer Praxis, die (Nicht-)Produktion künstlerischer Werke und die sie bedingende kulturelle Ökonomie formt.
